The Bear’s pick of Kickstarter Tabletop Games Jan 9th to 15th

With a vast array of Kickstarter games being released every week, it’s hard to sift through all the amazing titles vying for your attention.

But don’t worry, The Bear is here!

I’ll be compiling a weekly (hopefully!) list of Tabletop games that have come to Kickstarter over the previous seven days and deserve a moment of your time.

These are my choices from January 9th to the 15th:

Hermetica Kickstarter

Hermetica is an abstract strategy board game where each player’s turn consists of 3 actions that can be used to form synergistic opportunities that you can use to outwit your opponents. Offering a portable experience that is easy to learn and filled to the brim with in-depth tactictical fun, Hermetica is a wonderful two player strategy game that manages to avoid luck mechanics, such as dice or cards, and relies totally on a player’s own unique style and strategic approach to win the game.

But don’t just take my word for it – the team behind Hermetica have also created a digital version of the game that is available to play right now for free. All you have to do is head over to their Kickstarter page or their website and you can try this tactical treat for yourself.

To get your hands on a copy of Hermetica it’s going to cost you a minimum of $40 but this does come with an exclusive Kickstarter account Icon and all the stretch goals.

Hermetica’s campaign ends on the 8th February with delivery expected September 2018

John Carter of Mars Kickstarter

John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game by Modiphius

Created under license and with the co-operation of the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game is a thrilling opportunity to explore the dying world of Barsoon. With guidance from Scot Tracey Griffin, Modiphius have adapted their 2d20 system to create a planetary romance tabletop roleplaying game that you’ll easily mistake as coming straight from the mind of Edgar Rice Burroughs.Though the movie of John Carter may have been a flop, this RPG is looking like a winner and if the miniatures are anything to go by, a far superior experience than the 2012 monstrosity.

To get your hands on a copy of John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game will only cost you £15 for a PDF copy of the Core Rule book but I recommend getting the £25 version just to get your hands on those minis.

John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game’s campaign ends on the 11th of February with delivery expected July 2018

Western Legends Kickstarter

Western Legends By Kolossal Games

Western Legends is an open-world sandbox adventure of legendary proportions. Assuming the role of some of America’s most notorious historical figures, it’s your job to bring them up by their boot straps and become the legends we all know them to be. How you do this is up to you: drive cattle, run a ranch, prospect for gold, be a valued member of society… or gamble, rob a bank, steal some horses and become the most feared outlaw the west has ever seen.

Western Legends looks like a whole barrel of fun and thematically the game is perfect, with a multi use deck of cards, poker chips, nuggets of gold and that slightly tarnished look to the whole game’s design that truly brings the Old West to life.

To get your hands on a copy of Western Legends it is going to cost you a minimum of $60 but this does comes with all of the stretch goals and a ton of goodies inside the box.

Western Legends’ campaign ends on the 29th of January with delivery expected August 2018

Everdell Kickstarter

Everdell by Starling Games

Everdell is a beautifully realised worker placement game set in a charming world filled with  woodland critters. It’ll be your job to construct new buildings, establish a community, host events and converse with a series of outlandish characters before the winter moon rises.

Offering simple to learn game play and a unique rounded board with a three-dimensional tree growing from its base, Everdell is a sumptuous frolic through the forest that may surprise you with its depth.

Re-Chord Kickstarter

Re-Chord by Yanaguana Games

Turn your amp up to 11, put on your best black t-shirt and let’s ROCK in this guitar themed Euro game where being famous is more important than being able to play. Re-Chord challenges you to become a legend in the the guitarist world by using real picks to form chords before stringing them together to create classic rock anthems. The first player to perfect their craft and become a Rock God wins.

As a guitarist myself, the pun filled game is just too much of an opportunity to miss and with so many of people dreaming of one day being a star I can see this becoming a hit with all budding musicians (but not drummers because… you know, drummers).

To get your hands on a copy of Re-Chord it’s going to cost you a minimum of $29 for the game and all stretch goals the campaign manages to reach.

Re-Chord’s campaign ends on the 8th February with delivery expected September 2018

Countdown Action Edition Kickstarter

Countdown: Action Edition by Dog Might Games

Countdown: Action Edition is a hidden role game where players try to navigate a hostage situation set in a 1980’s action movie. One player takes on the role of our iconic action hero, while the other players are the hostages. However not all is as it seems: these captives may not be as innocent as they first appear. Mixed in with the cowering masses are some of the villains attempting to blow this place to kingdom come. It’s the hero’s job to arrest these crooks and free the innocent – but you’re going to need to decide quickly, as at any moment the villains’ bomb could explode!

Countdown: Action Edition is a classic hidden role game with a kick ass 80’s aesthetic; I don’t think it’s going to change the face of gaming but it’s sure as hell going to change my gaming evenings.

To get your hands on a copy of Countdown: Action Edition it’s going to cost you a minimum of $25 but this does come with all the stretch goals which will add a whole series of new hostages, villains and heroes to the excitement.

Countdown Action Edition’s campaign ends on 2nd of February with delivery expected January 2019

Supernatural Socks Kickstarter

Supernatural Socks by Atheris Games

Have you ever wondered what happens to the socks that go missing in the wash? Or even how they went missing in the first place? Well Supernatural Socks has the answer – and it’s ghosts. From the premise, it should be no surprise that Supernatural Socks is a silly card game about lost socks and the ghosts who steal them!

It’s an incredibly simple set collection game that sees you trying to get your socks through the wash whilst playing ghosts to interrupt your opponents’ laundry day. Filled with charm and suitable spooktacular artwork, Supernatural Socks is a perfect addition to any family gaming evening.

To get your hands on a copy of Supernatural Socks it’s going to cost you a minimum of $19 with higher pledges offering the opportunity to get hold of previous titles: Mutant Crops and Cul-De-Sac Conquest.

Supernatural Socks’ campaign ends on the 31st of January with delivery expected October 2018

Masque of the Red Death

Masque of the Red Death by IDW Games

Masque of the Red Death is a game of treachery and deduction set in the grim world of Edgar Allan Poe’s foreboding short story. As a plague ravages the country, you and a collection of other nobles attend a magnificent soirée filled with food, wine, dancing and debauchery. However, as you attempt to gain influence amongst the aristocracy, midnight chimes summon a hideous figure in the guise of the Red Death, stalking the corridors and killing any noble that crosses his path. By the time the party’s over you must be the most popular noble there… but popularity only matters if you survive the night.

Masque of the Red Death mixes worker placement, preprogramming and beautifully illustrated cards by Gris Grimly to create a wonderfully morose tabletop game.

To get your hands on a copy of Masque of the Red Death will cost you a minimum of $60 but this will get you the Deluxe Edition of the game with all stretch goals.

Masque of the Red Death’s campaign ends on January 27th with delivery expected July 2018

Highlander Kickstarter

Highlander: The Boardgame by River Horse

Highlander: The Boardgame is a fast paced tabletop game of strategy and chance that sees you duel through the ages as one of the 5 immortals, hoping to claim the ultimate prize. This is a ‘no brainer’ for any fan of the classic 80’s movie or Sean Connery’s outstanding Egyptian accent as it brings together everything we loved about the film in a battle that spans generations.

Using a mixture of cards and dice you must prepare your immortal for combat, collecting upgrades and encountering allies who will aid you on your journey. As you progress you have the chance to hunt down other immortals and take their heads – but be warned, they’re doing the same to you and as we all know… there can be only one!

River Horse have yet again managed to bring another 80’s classic to life with stunning miniatures and a strong respect for the source material. However this doesn’t mean it’ll be a good game; I love the miniatures River Horse produced for their Labyrinth board game but found the actual tabletop experience lacking so I do recommend finding some gameplay videos to see if this is a title for you or, if you’re like me, just get it because you want to have a mini Kurgen sitting on your desk.

To get your hands on a copy of Highlander: The Boardgame will cost you a minimum of £29 which will see you recieve a full copy of the game and all of the campaign’s stretch goals.

Highlander’s campaign ends on the 2nd of February with delivery expected November 2018

Monstaer Highway Kickstarter

Monster Highway by One Day West Games

Monster Highway is a road building board game for 2 to 4 players where you must escape the clutches of a marauding kaiju. A nuclear meltdown at the local power plant has caused the nearby lake to become saturated with radioactivity. So obviously it’s caused the surrounding fauna and flora to grow to an outrageous size and a wandering gator to become a colossal car crushing monster. It’s time to get the heck out of Dodge!

You must build roads from ground zero to your home base to win: using the two special dice you’ll place tiles to create new sections of road, move away from trouble or cause mayhem with the monster. It’s a deceptively clever game that looks like a blast to play with friends.

To get your hands on a copy of Monster Highway it will cost you a minimum of $35 which will get you a copy of the game and all of its stretch goals.

Monster Highway’s campaign ends on the 12th of February with delivery expected September 2018

Warriors of Jogu Kickstarter

Warriors of Jogu: Feint from Monsoon Publishing

Warriors of Jogu:Feint is a two-player bluffing and deduction card game that sees five different factions battle for control of Jogu. With the basic mechanics of the game being incredibly simple, it really allows for the individual factions’ unique powers and abilities to add a great amount of depth and cunning to the game. Though there is a lack of variety to the cards available for each faction, it really forces you to make good use of every card you have.

With wonderful artwork, well designed components and the ease with which this could be expanded, I look forward to seeing how well this game is received and what wonderful factions they have in-store for us in the future.

To get your hands on a copy of Warriors of Jogu: Feint will cost you a minimum of $30 but this only comes with 3 of the factions so I recommend paying the extra $9 to get the core set containing all five.

Warriors of Jogu’s campaign ends on the 16th of February with delivery expected July 2018

If there are any other board games you think I should check out or a Kickstarter campaign I missed, head over to the contact section and leave me a message.
